Extraordinary large bracelet by the incomparable Sonwai…..
Commissioned in 1993, this rare example dazzles with it’s company of perfect stones, corals and exotic woods. Opals fire while black ebony wood anchors the brilliant colors of turquoises and corals meticulously placed within this perfect work of Native American art. It is undeniably a tour de force masterpiece by one of the premier Indigenous artists creating today.
Sonwai (b. 1949- ), is the artistic name used by Verma Nequatewa. Verma began working with her uncle, the late Charles Loloma, in the mid-1960’s and continued working with him until his studio closed in the early 1990’s. At that time she opened her own studio and has continued his teachings through her own jewelry.
Measures: 6.875 “ inside end to end plus an additional 1.25” gap. It is 1.625” wide at the center tapering to 1.125’ at the terminals. The inlay rises 3/8ths” high from the interior. The piece was a substantial 162 grams. Sterling.
