Very large 15 " Hopi Redware Cylinder. ca 1940
This extraordinary Hopi Redware cylinder jar is an exceptional example of the form. Morphed Rainbirds flank two sides of the jar rendered in black and white. Hopi red is actually yellow in its un-fired state and is considered much more difficult to accomplish and large examples like this one are scarce. The work reminds of sharply of the work of Paqua Naha yet the piece is unsigned leaving us to conjecture as to the maker.
Measures: 7.75” w. x 15” h.
Condition is excellent with one minor flake off the rim. Of mention is a slight asymmetry to the height of the rim only while the jar itself stands vertically straight.
A very rare and striking example of Hopi artistry.
