Grace Medicine Flower. Very large. Santa Clara Pueblo
Grace Medicine Flower is an Indigenous artist best known for her intricately carved red-ware and black-ware pottery pieces. Embellished further with scraffito incised designs her work reflects the spiritual beliefs of her ancestors and often features birds, wildlife, and flowers. Grace Medicine Flower was born in 1938 at Santa Clara Pueblo. She is a member of the famous Tafoya pottery family and the niece of Margaret Tafoya. Her pots from 1968 to 1972 were done in collaboration with her father, Camilio Tafoya, and are signed with both of their names. Grace creates her pottery from local clay she digs herself at Santa Clara Pueblo. She dries the clay in the sun and fires the work outside. Her work began in miniatures but has evolved to include larger bowls and jars.
This very large example of the artwork of Grace Medicine Flower is the largest example of her work we have ever encountered. Deeply carved and polished and then scraffito decorated with butterflies and flowers it is an extraordinary example by one of the most beloved Santa Clara potters of all time. A micaceous slip sparkles in the background and in the artworks interior. It truly is a treasure among Pueblo Pottery.
