Suku Hemba Helmet Mask.

Hemba masks used by the Suku are carved in wooden cylinder from and typically surmounted by a figure or ancestor. The red under-paint typifies this example as having originated in the southern portion of the region. RDC/DRC Congo. These ceremonial masks represent the ancestor community and assure the success of the hunt, heal the infirm and punish criminal activity through their spiritual intercession.

First half of the 20ht Century. Shows traces of tribal use.

Measures: 9" w. x 12" h. without the raffia ruff.

Condition is overall very good with native repairs as shown. The raffia is old and brittle and degrades if over-handled. Surface patina is stable and remarkably beautiful. The powerful presence of this piece is profound.
